Starting this Friday, the day after this post goes live, I will be at FanExpo Boston at Artist Alley Table A602 with the always awesome Chris Robinson. We will have so many books for you to look at and buy, you can bring us books we worked on to sign, and we are overall just terrific conversationalists with over two decades of comic experience between us, and that alone makes us worth a visit.
This is my first show since doing Emerald City Comic Con earlier this year. I have even more books and work to share and that puts a smile on my face. Also the fact that I am going back to Massachusetts to do my first ever comic convention there is special. Chris put the possibility of doing this show on my radar and as I’ve expressed to him, I owe him for helping me do this thing I didn’t know was a major goal/milestone for me.
It’s going to be awesome. I am excited. I hope to see you there.

On September 3rd, Cruel Universe Vol. 2 #2 comes out. The second issue in the second volume of the critically-acclaimed sci-fi anthology series. Do you need to have read anything to read this issue? No. But…that last volume WAS awesome, and the first issue of this book which comes out in August was also awesome, I highly recommend them.
And this second issue that I’m a part of? Oh man…oh man…it’s really stacked. There are three stories in the book. “For Art’s Sake” by Chris Condon and Sam Kivelä, “Ham Radio” by Melissa Flores and Claire Roe. And then “There’s An Alien In My Basement” by me and Riley Rossmo. Me and Riley? We hit a homerun, this is one of the best comics I have ever made, you are going to love it. I am Babe Ruth-ing myself right now, I feel that confident about the work.
Chris Condon is one of the best and most prolific writers working in comics right now. His work on Marvel and DC titles like Ultimate Wolverine (with artist Alessandro Cappuccio) and Green Arrow (with artist Montos) are pulpy, thoughtful, action-packed, and very relevant to the times we are living in. The same is true for his outstanding creator-owned work like That Texas Blood (with artist Jacob Phillips) and News from the Fallout (with artist Jeffery Alan Love). Melissa Flores is the beating heart of the current Power Rangers comics from Boom! Studios and has been for the last few years…her work on that franchise alone has made me a big fan of her work, she writes phenomenal super hero team comics, which are astonishingly hard to do, and she is excellent with character. This is the first of two comics I will be a part of with her in September, the other being the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: Darkest Hour Deluxe Hardcover which we will talk about another time. Claire Roe is one of the best artists working in comics and someone I have had the fortune working with as an editor on comics like Batgirl & the Birds of Prey (with writers Julie Benson and Shawna Benson) and Dark Spaces: The Hollywood Special (With writer Jeremy Lambert). I don’t know Sam Kivelä’s work as well as I would like but from what I have seen online he is fantastic. It’s a thrill to be in this comic with these folks.
So…you should buy it. The book has it’s final order cut-off date on 8/11. And then it comes out on 9/3. It’s worth it, it’s awesome, I will be talking about it a lot more in the months ahead. In the meantime, look at all of these amazing covers for the issue!

This week marks my 52nd consistent weekly post. So for the last year I have made at least one post (one week I did two) a week for this Newsletter. There are times where I don’t think I need to do it, times where I don’t think anyone is interested, and times where I’m busy and just consider putting it off but…I am so happy I do this. Having a consistent platform where I write something every week is great for me.
This Newsletter is promotional, which is something I needed to get better at and it has helped me do that. It has introduced me to creators I did not know before like Chris Robinson who is now a buddy, writing friend, and convention partner, which has been amazing. It’s allowed me to talk more deeply to folks I have collaborated with like Sid Kotian, Nikola Čižmešija, Pablo M. Collar and others. It makes for a great warm-up before working on scripts, or sometimes a great cool-down. The Newsletter also ensures I have something to write every week, which keeps me from becoming to anxious on things where I do not have much going on.
And most importantly…the Newsletter allows me to tell myself, tell you, and tell the world every week that I am a writer. I am a professional comic book writer, it’s something I work at everyday, I am not giving up, and I am not going anywhere.
Stay safe!
