Four New Comics Announced

A Shot At Some of My Past Work
Happy July! We are officially in the heart of the summer and at the halfway mark of the year 2025, both of which are pretty hard to wrap my head around. Even harder to wrap my head around? Over the last two weeks I have announced I have four more comics coming out in the months ahead. 2025 has already been a pretty fantastic year for my comic book writing career, and things are only getting better as we head into the back half of the year. Today, I’m going to go through the three new ones and talk about the comic I have coming out last week at the end of this post.
Let’s get started!
Aquaman: Shark Week

Aquaman: Shark Week Cover by Pablo M. Collar. Copyright Warner Bros Discovery.
Earlier this year DC editor extraordinaire and Aquaman’s biggest fan Michael McCalister asked me if I wanted to write a 20 page Aquaman story that would be a stand alone story and promote this year’s Shark Week. There are few things in life I have said yes to faster. I have worked with Michael on several short stories and had a blast, and writing Aquaman for him is an honor given how much he loves the character. And for Shark Week? Who doesn’t love Shark Week? And my dad’s nickname his Sharky (mine, the Little Shark), so in some ways this was written in the stars for me.
You can find Aquaman: Shark Week, subtitle “Air Jaws Allies”, on the DCU Infinite digital service if you are a member. I got to research about great white sharks who can jump fifteen feet out of the water to catch their prey. What happens when Aquaman is down and out after a battle with his brother and nemesis the Ocean Master and seemingly his only allies are these Sharks? Who, might I add, he can’t communicate with because his powers are damaged after his battle with Ocean Master. A lot of exciting drama and shark coolness is the answer!
One of my favorite parts of this project is I got team-up again with artist Pablo M. Collar. You may remember I worked with Pablo on a John Stewart Green Lantern story called “Escape the Dark Fortress” For DC’s Are You Afraid of Darkseid Halloween anthology a few years back. Pablo was talented then, he’s even more amazing now. The story was brilliantly colored by industry legend Nick Filardi who I think did one of best coloring jobs ever. AND lettering master Tom Napolitano lettered this one. An excellent team.
Check out the book if you can, I think you’ll really dig it. Link here.
Check out the preview pages below, and come back next week when I will be running an interview I did with Pablo about the story.

Cruel Universe #2

Cruel Universe Vol. 2 #2 Main Cover by Lee Bermejo. Copyright EC Comics.

Cruel Universe Vol. 2 #2 Archive Variant Cover. Copyright EC Comics.
When EC Comics came roaring back via Oni Press last year, I was like “Man, that’s cool, that would be a pretty fun thing to get be a part of.” In the time they have been back they have produced so many outstanding anthology issues with some of the best creators in comics covering the worlds of horror, sci-fi, and fantasy. Doing a great honor to the legacy of the classic EC Comics.
All of that makes me so thrilled to share that I wrote a story that will be running in EC Comics’ Cruel Universe #2 which will be on sale 9/3/25. Even cooler? Once again I will be teaming up with my artistic partner in crime Riley Rossmo and the outstanding colorist Inaki Azpiazu. The fact that we collaborate not once but twice this year, is something I could not be more grateful for. Our story is called “I Have An Alien in My Basement” and it’s one of my favorite stories I have written yet, I think you are going to really dig it and be quite surprised by it.
A murderer’s row of covers on this one. Main cover by the legendary Lee Bermejo. Variant covers by the great Tom Fowler and Albert Monteys.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Nation #9

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Nation #9 Main Cover by Declan Shalvey. Copyright Nickelodeon.
After the rousing success Vitor Cafaggi and I had on our “Northampton Ninja” back-up story in Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Nation #6, we are coming back to tell one more back-up story in the final issue of the title, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Nation #9 on sale this August. And it’s not just the two of us.
I had the honor of co-writing for the very first time, with one of my dearest friends, and one of the greatest comic minds I have ever known. The legendary Andy Khouri. Who I guarantee has edited some of your favorite DC Comics, Teenage Mutant Turtle Comics, and comic book journalism. We teamed up to tell a story checking in on all of the great mutants living in Mutant Town. You are not going to want to miss it. The fusion of Andy’s mind, my mind, and Vitor’s mind is going to deliver something really fantastic.
And this issue has a stellar lead story by the Thundercats team of Declan Shalvey and Drew Moss. Declan Shalvey did the main cover seen above. And below you can see two stellar variant covers one by Vitor Cafaggi himself showing off the character Mona Lisa who plays a huge roll in our story, and the other by Fero Pe showing off the TMNT’s greatest foe The Shredder.
Thrilled to be back in the world of TMNT’s mutants with one of my greatest friends, Andy, and with one of the best artists I have collaborated with to date, Vitor Cafaggi.

Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: Darkest Hour Deluxe Edition

Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: Darkest Hour Deluxe Hardcover Cover. Copyright Hasbro.
My whole life, I have been a massive fan of the Power Rangers franchise. I was one of the original and youngest kids who was in on the phenomenon that was Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers. And I consistently watched that show through it’s first twelve seasons, have watched more of it since, have been a huge fan of the BOOM! Studios Comics, and during the pandemic started getting into the Japanese show Super Sentai where Power Rangers got it’s terrific costume and zord footage.
So it brings me an incredible amount of joy that Boom Studios, Allyson Gronowitz (who was my editor there at the time, and is now my editor on Cruel Universe at Oni, shout out to her!), and Caroline Butler for letting me do a short story with the terrific artist Esdras Cristobal that will run in the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: Darkest Hour Deluxe Hardcover on sale 9/30/25. Our story is called “In Between a Rocky and a Hard Place” and if know your rangers, you’ll know one ranger who certainly will be a big deal in that story.
I discovered Power Rangers on Fox Kids the same way I discovered Batman and the X-Men. In my head and heart the Power Rangers hold a very similar place and are some of my favorite superheroes ever. It was a huge honor to get to be a small part of Boom’s incredible Power Rangers comics and I hope someday I have the fortune of contributing again. Power Rangers: Prime by Melissa Flores and Michael Yg is one of my favorite reads month in and month out, and thought the first issue of VR Troopers by Mairghread Scott and Sebastian Priz was terrific too!
Hello Darkness #12

Hello Darkness #12 Main Cover by Miguel Mercado
This Wednesday July 9th, my first original story “Tiny, Little Men” comes out in the pages of Boom! Studios’ Hello Darkness #12. I got to collaborate on the story with the brilliant artist Riley Rossmo, the amazing colorist Inaki Azpiazu, the story was lettered by the wonderful Shawn Lee, and we were guided brilliantly by editor David Mariotte. Here are the first two pages of the story. I hope you will consider buying it!

DC’s Kal-El-Fornia Love: Superboys Story

DC’s Kal-El-Fornia Love Main Cover by Bernard Chang
On Wednesday 7/30/25 DC’s Kal-El-Fornia Love comes out in comic stores. The anthology is about different members of the Superman family having summer adventures in the great state of California. I wrote a story about two Superboys (Conner Kent and Jon Kent) teaming up to stop something mysterious that is causing havoc in the Northern California wilderness. The story is drawn by the brilliant Joey Vazquez who stopped by the Newsletter last week to talk about the story. Because you asked nicely I will show you his first two pages, colored by the brilliant Luis Guerrero, and the two variant covers for the issue below.

New History of the DC Universe

New History of the DC Universe #1 Main Cover by Chris Samnee and Giovanna Niro. Copyright DC Comics.
Last week the first issue of the four issue New History of the DC Universe mini-series came out. All four issues written by Mark Waid. Art on issue one by Jerry Ordway and Todd Nauck. Issue two by Brad Walker and Mike Allred. Issue three by Dan Jurgens and Doug Mahnke. And issue four by Tony S. Daniel and Hayden Sherman. Main covers for the series by Chris Samnee and Giovanna Niro. An index running through all four issues written by me, based on research by myself and Mark Waid, with special help from John Wells.
The first issue was a smashing success and the remaining three I have no doubt will be as well. It has been a tremendous honor to be a small part of this team, working alongside Mark Waid, some of DC’s best artists ever, and an incredible crew of editors on this project. Issues 2 will be out on 7/23/25, Issue 3 will be out on 8/27/25, and Issue 4 will be out on 9/24/25.

With these projects in addition to my earlier contributions to DC’s Lex and the City and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Nation #6 I have contributed to nine projects this year that you will be seeing. And hopefully there’s more coming up. The backhalf of my year is pretty clear and I would like to fill it the way I filled the first half. This is my dream to keep making comics, to keep having come out consistently, and to have you read and enjoy them.
That’s it for this week, but that was a lot of pretty awesome information, huh? There’s a lot of really cool stuff ahead!
Until it all comes out?
Stay safe!
