Renewed, Refreshed, Ready for the Rest of the Year
A Great Vacation

A Picture I Took From My Seat at Dodger Stadium.
Last week I took the week off to spend time in Los Angeles with my family who came out to visit, and we had an awesome week together. On top of just enjoying each other’s company, and being happy to see each other, as they live all the way across the country in Massachusetts, we did a lot of great vacation stuff. Ate at a lot of great restaurants, took a trip to the beach, spent a day at Universal Studios, went to a good number of comic book stores with my younger brother, went to both the Glendale Galleria AND the Americana, saw the Dodgers lose to the Mets live, ate some delicious ice cream, read some books, and ultimately became really refreshed as a result of doing all of the above.
So shout out to my mom, dad, and my brother Josh for coming out here and helping me take a real break. I’m reading to take on the rest of 2025 and this week I am going to remind you of all the awesome stuff I have coming up this summer!
New History of the DC Universe

New History of the DC Universe #1 Cover by Chris Samnee. Copyright DC Comics.
Right before my vacation started, it was shared that I have been involved in the New History of the DC Universe mini-series written by Mark Waid, interior art from Jerry Ordway, Todd Nauck, Mike Allred, Brad Walker, Dan Jurgens, Doug Mahnke and more to be announced, with a ton of covers from folks like Chris Samnee, Dan Mora and more. The mini-series is going to be what the title promises, a comic book telling of the complete history of the DC Universe. Mark Waid is one the best writers and biggest lovers of the DC Universe and with the artists I listed? You know this is a cannot miss project.
The book is edited by the stellar team of Andrew Marino, Brittany Holzherr, and Marquis Draper. They called me in to help do some research work on the project, once the first issue comes out in a couple weeks on June 25th, 2025 you will get a better sense of what I contributed. I have had the fortune of reading the finished issues, Mark’s incredible scripts, and seeing the amazing artwork come in and as a lifelong DC fan? It’s a stellar project. The project is a massive undertaking, and one the whole team has not only taken very seriously but everyone involved has also brought nothing short of their best to it. Readers are going to feel the passion, love, creativity, and expertise that went into every part of the book.
I feel honored that I am a small part of this momentous project, and I hope you guys dig it in a few weeks when it comes out. Once it drops I’ll talk about it a little more!

“Tiny, Little Men” Page 1 by Riley Rossmo and Inaki Azpiazu from Hello Darkness #12.
On July 9th Hello Darkness #12 from BOOM! Studios comes out. This issue of their critically acclaimed, best-selling, monthly horror anthology features the original story “Tiny, Little Men” written by me, drawn by Riley Rossmo, colors by Inaki Azpiazu, and letters by the great Shawn Lee. You can see the first unlettered page above. The story is awesome, and it is my first official, published, original comic book story, so it’s a big milestone for me. Also this marks the fourth time I have gotten to collaborate with the amazing Riley Rossmo, which is not something I ever take for granted.
Special thanks again to the fantastic David Mariotte and Caroline Butler for having us on the project. David and Caroline edit Hello Darkness month in and month out, and do a stellar job. I have worked on monthly anthologies, they are very rewarding, and very challenging to do and they do a stellar job.
When the story comes out I think I’ll ask Riley, and perhaps Inaki as well, some questions about the work we did so you can get an extra insight.
DC’s Kal-El-Fornia Love

DC’s Kal-El-Fornia Love Main Cover by Bernard Chang. Copyright DC Comics.
On July 30th DC’s next seasonal anthology comes out. This one titled DC’s Kal-El-Fornia Love, and it focuses on different members of the Superman family going out west to California and having different summer-time adventures.
The story I wrote for the anthology focuses on Superboy (Conner Kent) and former Superboy turned Superman (Jon Kent) as they come together to contain a mysterious force that is doing damage to California’s mighty forests. My artistic collaborator on the story is the incredible Joey Vazquez who drew the hell out of this story and brought so much to it. I am going to be interviewing him on the newsletter before the end of the month. He’s someone I hope I get to collaborate with again. The story is colored by the incredible Luis Guerrero who has probably colored some of your favorite modern DC Comics. And edited by Andrew Marino, who I always love working with.
This story is going to be a good one. As a matter of fact, the whole anthology is going to be pretty terrific. I’m talking to a few of the writers about running a big interview the day the book comes out and we’ll see if that’s something I can manage to put together.
And There’s More?
Believe it or not, yeah. I have four more writing projects coming up that should be announced shortly. This year has been my busiest yet as a writer and it’s awesome to see all these things start to come out. Particularly in July…as shared above I have two comics I wrote coming out in July, and an issue of New History of the DC Universe I did research work for…and that’s the most amount of comics I have had as non-editor ever. It’s another big moment for me I want to make sure I stop and appreciate.
Don’t get me wrong, I am still very much on the hunt for work for the rest of the year, the hunt never ends, but I am happy with my output so far this year. I had the goal of working on more projects than I did last year, and that has already been achieved and then some.
So stay tuned, I am going to be sharing a lot more about the projects I listed above, and more about the projects you don’t know about soon.
On top of these projects I am going to be going to two conventions in the months ahead! And once I can tell you what those conventions are, I will tell you, and I hope if you are available you will come by and say.
Stay safe!
